The question of religion is as important a concern as human happiness. This reflection demonstrated the interest that Émile Zola has in it. It has proven that the criticism that the French writer formulates against Catholicism is less institutional than it is addressed to the clergy, who perverts its ideal of cohesion and social regulation. In a pragmatic way, he denounces the political and ideological instrumentalisation of the Catholic Church, which becomes, a tool of domination of the weakest, by the strongest. His criticism can be explained above all by the desire to see the emergence of a Catholic institution, not only freed from the pettiness of religious actors, which is capable of contributing to the rehabilitation of human dignity.
